My ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review posted on Goodreads
Seventh or eighth Follett novel for me. A lovely journey, this one, learning about Stonehenge, a favorite monument and for me, one of the most sacred places on earth. As with Pillars and the Century Trilogy, characters and plot are some of the best in much of historical fiction. Follett completed some major research and explains the theories about the huge stone structure’s beginning and its ancient refurbishment. We learn how it was used as a giant sundial to calculate days of the year and the seasons — so important to planning for crops and herds. He also mentions frequently that timing of small tasks was compared to how long it takes a pot of water to boil. But how big a pot? And how full? I wondered. As the farmers and herdsmen feud we learn that their problems began eons before Rodgers & Hammerstein told us in song that they should be friends. The story of Stonehenge is our story too, how we evolved, how we learned, and how we survived.
